"Inherited a house in Short Hills, NJ... Saturn came out, found six of eight units past replacement date, replaced them all... The documentation they left came in handy when I refinanced."
— Stephanie R.
"Rental property compliance... Saturn handled all three units, gave me documentation per unit, and the insurer accepted it without further questions."

The little test button on your smoke detector doesn't test what most people think it does. When you press it, the button triggers the alarm electronics — the speaker, the light, the interconnect signal. What it doesn't test is the actual smoke-sensing chemistry inside the detector.
That's the part that fails first. And it fails silently. This is why every fire safety authority in the United States recommends replacement on a 10-year schedule regardless of how the unit appears to function.
Every 10 years, regardless of how they appear or sound on the test button. The chemical sensors degrade silently, and most detectors in Short Hills homes are well past replacement age without their owners realizing.
Ionization detects fast, flaming fires. Photoelectric detects slow, smoldering fires. Current best practice in Short Hills, NJ is dual-sensor units that detect both.
If you have an attached garage, yes. Cars idling in attached garages produce CO that migrates into homes.
Battery-only units, yes. Hardwired units that connect to the home's electrical system require a licensed electrician for code compliance and for what insurers in Short Hills, NJ expect to see.
When one detector senses smoke, every detector in your Short Hills home alarms simultaneously. Interconnection buys critical minutes.
